This is a series of insights gleaned from surveys and interviews with the most effective churches of the Georgia Baptist Mission Board in reaching and keeping people through Sunday School and Small Groups.
10 Things That Surprised Me About These Churches (part #17)
#6 – Question #36: Which of the following are you using to create more space for classes/groups? The response that scored the highest; from these fastest growing churches, was that 54% of the churches said that the construction of facilities was being studied or is presently under construction.
For several years I’ve heard some of the so-called experts say that “churches are no longer building new buildings.” But well over half of these fastest growing churches are seriously planning or have already begun construction of new space. It is true that the past decade of economic difficulties have impacted all areas of church life including the financing of new church building projects. In the past 10 years I’ve witnessed most of the church-only construction companies and church-only architecture firms close their doors because of the lack of business. Very few churches have done anything in the past few years in the area of expanding facilities but it seems to be turning around.
The increase in the number of churches building new facilities is another indication of the need to continue an emphasis directed toward on-campus Sunday morning small groups. There may come a day when churches will no longer be allowed to or even afford to construct new space but adding space, building buildings is still a viable undertaking of churches today.
