Spiritual Renewal in your Sunday School class or Small Group

A few weeks ago at the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention in Columbus, Ohio, Ronnie Floyd, the President of the Southern Baptist Convention issued a call for national spiritual awakening. In preparation for this time Dr. Floyd stated:
“While this present status is undeniable, much of the church in America sleeps. Spiritual lukewarmness is plaguing the church, resulting in the infrequency of church attendance, declining churches, lagging evangelism, sagging giving, and generational disconnectedness. Complacency and conflict categorize the church more than contrition and compassion. Among the people of God, announcements and promotions within the church gain a higher priority in planning and follow through than prayer.”
We are so in need of spiritual renewal in our lives and churches and spiritual awakening in our state and in our land!

In addressing this need, the summer term of LifeWay’s Bible Studies for Life curriculum will be focusing on Spiritual Renewal with a six week small group experience, Awake: The Call to a Renewed Life by Ronnie Floyd. In this study, Christ-followers will be called to return to God, their first love, prayer, God’s Word, unity with other Christians, and the task of fulfilling the Great Commission personally and as a church.

The sessions will focus on a different element that is crucial to our experiencing spiritual renewal in our lives and churches:

July 19 – Return to God – Jonah 1:1-3; 3:1-5,10
July 26 – Return to Your First Love – Revelation 2:1-7
August 2 – Return to Prayer – Nehemiah 1:3-10
August 9 – Return to God’s Word – Nehemiah 8:1-8
August 16 – Return to Unity – Acts 4:31-37
August 23 – Return to the Task – Acts 13:1-3,44-52

Another resource available to you, free of charge this summer, is Sunday School University’s Sunday School preview (sundayschooluniversity.com). Dr. Tim Smith, Specialist for Sunday School/Small Group Ministries of the Georgia Baptist Convention, is the instructor for this session of lessons. Dr. Smith is a gifted communicator and gives very keen insight into God’s Word in relation to these important aspects of renewal. I have used this resource with Sunday School teachers and leaders in churches that I have served. It is an excellent supplementary resource that provides effective preparation for the lesson.

I encourage you to utilize this resource in your small group ministry this summer! The following are the instructions from the folks at Sunday School University.
